This morning I checked my horoscope, as I do on most days. Today, however, I got advice that could be applied to a number of situations and experiences and I thought it was too good to share. To all of my fellow LEOs out there, take heed.

{World of the Year} What ONE Word Reflects Your Vision for 2016?
At the top of the year, many people are thinking about their future and making resolutions for 2016. Since some people have a hard time keeping up with resolutions, selecting a word for oneself could be a more realistic goal for some of my busier readers. Back in 2013, I started asking my readers on the She Makes Cents Facebook page to share one word to reflect your personal goals/resolution/vision for the year ahead and the response I got was inspiring, thoughtful, and honest. For me, the year 2013 was my year of BALANCE, 2014 was my year of FOCUS, and 2015 was my year of PASSION. This year I have selected BRAVERY as my word.
If you could choose one word to reflect your personal goals/resolution/vision for 2016, what word would you choose? Please share below.

SMC Book Club: Leave Your Mark
Feed your mind or it will starve… – Danielle YB Vason
Back in college my roommate/future doctor, Safiya, diagnosed me with what we now refer to as “Shiny Penny Syndrome”. Shiny Penny Syndrome is when you are focused on one thing and something else steals your attention. It’s exactly what happens when I see pretty shiny things or when dogs see squirrels. Well, let just say that the shemakescents January book selection was my latest shiny penny. I was walking through my favorite book store on the hunt for a Christmas gift when I saw the cutest book cover. Mint green, coffee cup, and red lipstick stains immediately caught my eye! Then I realized the author was Aliza Licht aka @DKNYPRGirl, solidifying the book “Leave Your Mark” as the first shemakescents book selection of the year.

{Wise Words} Are You Beautiful?
For those who know me personally, you know that I’m the type who is all about time and the numbers. I’m the girl who broke down how much she makes per minute to show just how much my time is valued in the workplace. We have all heard it before that time is money; however, I guess I have always thought about it in terms of one’s career…especially when I was billing my time at one of Atlanta’s top law firms. When thinking about time as currency, are you spending yours well?
In honor of my “Word of the Year“, P-A-S-S-I-O-N, I’d like to share this quote from Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, author of Lean In, and overall empower-er of girl power in the workplace. I choose the word passion because I resolve to be passionate in my thoughts because thoughts become actions before they become habits. Imagine how divine the year will be once I am consistently and habitually passionate about things that require my time (i.e. financial goals, career, self-improvement,and love)…just to name a few things one can be passionate about. The focus and elevated motivation will help this new year be my best year! #SMCYearofPassion
