{Cheers to 2013} We Made It Video & NYE Messages Of Peace

The year 2012 has been filled with exciting and life changing experiences and of course, Google has captured it all in a YouTube video. From the US presidential elections to the Olympics, from births to passing’s, things we Googled and things we will never forget. When looking back, I can’t help but acknowledge how great this year has truly been. While I may not have the riches, I am living a rich life full of people who care about me and in the end, that’s all you can ask for. Although I don’t live in New York and I will be watching the Peach drop tonight, I will keep the message of peace in the forefront of my thoughts. “Let There Be Peace” is the theme reflected in 2013 Times Square New Years Eve Ball. This year people are asked to share their messages of peace that will be printed onto the confetti released at midnight. You can submit your messages in one of three ways:

Sentiments of peace can be shared until December 31st at 5 PM EST:

           1. Tweet your message with hashtag #PeaceNYE
           2. Post to Waterford’s Facebook page with hashtag #PeaceNYE
           3. Post to Times Square’s Facebook page with hashtag #PeaceNYE

Happy New Year!

5 Ways to Make Outlet Shopping More Enjoyable

Danielle YB Vason's avatarshemakescents

On Tuesday, I took a trip to the North Georgia premium outlets with visiting family from out of time. My intention was to enjoy girl time with my cousin and Aunts and not to blow my budget.  Maybe a shirt or two, at most.  Certainly, I didn’t anticipate the goodies I would walk away with. Good thing, I knew a few ways to save even more when outlet shopping. Here are some of my tricks.

Bring cash

Bringing cash reduces my chances of overspending. Unlike a card, you can physically see your cash stack dwindle down with every purchase you make.  When people make purchases with cash, they take longer to ponder the value of what they are buying as opposed to mindless shopping.

{Got Goals} How to Make and Achieve Your Goals

My TV best friend, Carrie Bradshaw, once stated that “as we drive along this road called life, occasionally a gal will find herself a little lost. And when that happens, I guess she has to let go of the coulda, shoulda, woulda, buckle up and just keep going”. I coulda lived without that purchase, I shoulda saved more, and I woulda done it like this if… Well folks, one of my favorite things about going into the New Year are the ability to reflect and refresh. It’s time to move toward your goals/resolutions for the future.

Replace Your Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda with Been There Done That!

Write your goals out. Sometimes putting pen to paper makes things so much more real. Mental goals will always stay within the mind if you don’t take this first step.

pexels-photo-110473.jpegKeep It Real. Sure, I would love to save $10,000,000 in a years’ time…wouldn’t everyone and buy a yacht? For my lifestyle, though, that would be a highly unrealistic goal. Impractical goals are the enemy of progress. I’m not saying lower your standards. I’m saying that setting attainable goals and completing them makes you want to push forward to reach even higher.  In contrast, setting unrealistic goals simply enforces a defeated attitude.

pexels-photo-625418.jpegSet a Goal Date. There are many procrastinators in my life…me being one of them. Setting a goal date is like doing crunches and knowing you have five more to go… it just pushes you to complete it. Now imagine just doing crunches without knowing how many you have left to go. After a while, you will abandon your goal, right? Set a date and strive to hit it.

Tell Someone. Find someone or several people and tell them your goals. Not only will you have someone to help keep you accountable, but if you have someone who actually wants to see you succeed, they will help eliminate triggers that will get you off task. This may mean that you will hear the word “no” when you need to hear it but aren’t ready to accept it.

Check-In. Last year, I was able to accomplish many of my goals/resolutions because SMC reader, Audrey, asked for an update. Little did she know, it made me reflect on the goals that I wrote about and published for the world to read (steps 1 and 4) and made me want to follow through on those long-lost goals. In fact, I ended up writing two update reports for those that follow SMC.

I challenge you to push forward.  Maybe you need to revisit a goal that was abandoned.  Maybe you have new goals.  Take a day or two and really think about where you want to be and thing create a roadmap on how to get there.  Good Luck!Follow Danielle YB Vason of She Makes Cents for your money, career, and lifestyle inspiration

{Friday Funnies} The BEST Ugly Christmas Sweater

Last week, the Mr. and I sent a box of goodies to our friends over in Germany (hi Nate & Niki). One of the items included this awesome Christmas sweater book because they were attending their first Ugly Christmas Sweater Party… too bad this girl’s picture wasn’t included, because she and her sweater ROCK!  If they had a contest at the party she attended, I bet she won.

{SMC} Awesome Gifts that Give Back

Okay, I’m still not done with my Christmas shopping and it is stressing me out. Not only am I coming uncomfortably close to maxing out the budget I set for Christmas but also I still have no idea what to get some people still left on the list. May I add, this is the first Christmas I can remember not really giving to others. So then, I got the idea to research gifts that give back that don’t suck and here is what I found:

Awesome Gifts that Give Back!

  • Shelter Pups.  Shelter Pups are custom stuffed animals that look just like your four-legged friend.  You can send in a picture of YOUR dog and they will make you a stuffed one that looks just like yours or you can adopt one that needs a home.  I was intrigued by this site, which was started by a young girl who loves dogs, because as avid dog lover who save my 2 dogs from shelter life, I loved the idea of my purchase, or adoption as they call it, coming with Rescue Points worth real money that can donated to over 5,000 authorized SPCA shelters.  Adopting a Shelter Pup is so much more than just purchasing an object. It’s a vote and a cheer for doing things differently, better, and in a way that can benefit everyone – humans and dogs alike.  Plus they are just too darn cute!

  • TOMS.  They are cute, comfy, and with every purchase, TOMS will donate a pair to a child in need.  They give new shoes that are specifically designed for the person receiving them and are often paired with education about hygiene and healthy behavior. Why Shoes? Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk.  A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause. Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.  Many times children can’t attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t receive an education, they don’t have the opportunity to realize their potential.
  • Sevenly.  Sevenly is a non-profit that creates weekly cause campaigns where people could purchase lifestyle products that benefited a partner charity, Sevenly successfully unlocked a way to not only raise major funding but huge awareness too. Every week they bring awareness to a problem and come up with a plan for a solution.  This week they are partnering with Reece’s Rainbow to help orphans with Down syndrome and other special needs become adopted by their forever family. With your support, they will provide financial grants to qualified families so adoption of these beautiful children is made possible.

{Every Woman Should Know} How to Pack Light

how-to-pack-light

PACKED AND BETTER THAN EVER!

For starters, this is what I call a “duh post”. I do recognize I’m probably writing a post about stuff we all should already know… things that should be common “cents”, but sometimes we, or maybe just I, need a reminder or two. As I was preparing for my week and a half long trip to Germany and the Czech Republic to celebrate the Mr.’s 30th birthday, my father warned the Mr. of my normal packing habits. Yes, I’m that girl who tends to over pack, although I like to think of it as being prepared. With airlines now charging extra fees, I knew I had to get break this habit…and fast. So, I tapped into my old Container Store Days (my first job) and combined my organization skills to get a week and a half worth of stuff into ONE checked bag + a carry on.

MAKING IT ALL FIT

Pack Basics, Pack In a Color Theme, and Bring Accessories: For this trip, I over packed significantly. At the end of the day, I used jeans as my main basic and stayed in the color theme of burgundy. That way, my accessories complimented the outfits that I created.

Roll Don’t Fold: I don’t know why I ever folded clothes to begin with. Not only does rolling clothes create more space, but it also reduces wrinkles in your clothing; thus, you spend your time exploring a new city/country rather than ironing.

If You Can’t Get More than One Wear Out of It, Leave it At Home: I used to think that I had to wear something different every day. Let me be the first to admit I was stupid. I mean seriously, it’s vacation. No one will say, “hey, did you see {insert your name here} in the same pair of jeans”?

Wear your Heaviest Shoes: I got this tip from my Dad. It makes your bag lighter and creates more space.

Pack the Heaviest Stuff in Your Carry On

  • Pack-It Systems and Travel Space Bags: I didn’t use a Pack-It system on this trip, but I did use the travel space bags for our dirty clothes and travel blanket. I found it to be very helpful in unpacking, because the clean clothes never mixed with the dirty clothes AND…. the dirty clothes went directly from the space bag to the hamperJ.
  • Pack At Least 3 days in Advanced. Pack at least 3 days in advanced and reexamine your choices the day before you leave. At this point, you should be removing unnecessary items instead of adding last minute oversights. Looking back, I could have removed an extra ten pounds worth of stuff that I never used or wore. Plus, you want to leave additional room for cool stuff you pick up during your travels.

On the day of our departure, my bag weighed 43lbs, right under the 50lb limit so no extra fees for me!!! In fact, my Mr.’s bag weighed more than mine did. Coming back was a different story, but doing good things for others allows good things to come your way. Right as my bag was being placed on the luggage scale at the airport, I noticed a woman having trouble lifting her bags. The Mr. did not notice her difficulty lifting, but he helped her because he is a gentleman. We stopped what we were doing to help her. Come to find out, it wasn’t that the bag was heavy, but the woman did not have full use of her arm. No one else in the airport helped her until the Mr. and I saw her. The woman at the check in counter thought what we did was so nice and told us about how people don’t help others too often. Needless to say, she did not charge me for my slightly heavier bag. Being nice to others is free and sometimes it can get you free things!!

{Happy Monday} Behind the Scenes of SMC

Happy Monday Folks!! Around this time of the year, people tend to reflect on things they want to change. I decided that I would not wait until the New Year and start making positive changes NOW; hence, the new look of the site. In addition to the new layout of SMC, we are getting our offices in order. Here are some offices that are giving me everything I need in terms of inspiration.

Check my inspiration for the new SMC office!

{Happiness} SMC hits 1,000,000 views!

Time to dance on the table and drink champagne….oh wait, it’s not even the weekend yet.  I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you. For those of you who frequent SMC, you may have heard me mention my latest goal is to set realistic goals. In doing so, I set a goal to hit the one million mark by March 1, 2013 (the 2 year Anniversary for SMC). Needless to say, I was beyond overjoyed when I checked my stats this past Saturday and realized, not only did I hit the million mark, but I surpassed it.  It has been amazingly cathartic to create SMC.  Over the course of this experience…and it has been an experience, I have posted 355 posts about finances, fashion, and all things fabulous and you’ve been there along the way. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for joining me as I balance finances fabulously.  YOU ROCK!

xoxo,

Danielle B.
